Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited the war-related Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, triggering criticism not only from China and South Korea but also from the United States.
He paid his first visit to the Shinto shrine on Thursday since assuming the premiership just one year ago.
Mr. Abe is the first sitting prime minister to visit the Yasukuni Shrine since Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, who was in office between 2001 and 2006 and visited the shrine every year. Mr.Abe did not visit the shrine during his first term in office from 2006 to 2007.
The Yasukuni Shrine honors those killed in wars involving Japan, including Class-A World War Two criminals. The shrine is seen by China and South Korea as a symbol of Japan's past militarism beause it honors Class-A war criminals among the war dead.
After his visit to the shrine, Mr. Abe told newsmen that he made the visit to pay his respects to those died for their country and to renew a pledge for Japan not to go to war again.
He said that has has no intention whatsoever of hurting the feelings of the people of China and South Korea.
Mr Abe said that Japan has upheld freedom and democracy since the end of World War Two and has followed a path as a pacifist nation.
He added that he will continue to explain this with modesty, decency and good faith and seek dialogue with other countries.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning Japanese Prime Minister Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, and lodged a strong protest against the Japanese government.
The statement said that the Chinese government expresses its strong indignation over the behavior
of the Japanese leader which grossly tramples on the setiment of the Chinese people and other Asian peoples victimized in the war and openly challenges the historical justice and human conscience.
The South Korean government also issued a statement denoucing Mr. Abe's visit to the shrine and lodged a strong protest against the Japanese government.
The statement said that the South Korean government cannot repress its condemnation and rage over Mr. Abe visiting the shrine despite concerns and warnings by neighboring countries and the international community.
The U.S.government issued a statement though its embassy in Tokyo, expressing disappointment at Mr. Abe's visit to the shrine.
The statement said that the United States is disappointed that Japan's leadership has taken an action that will exacerbate tensions with Japan's neighbors.
