Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike’s new local party and its allies have scored a landslide victory, while the Liberal Democratic Party suffered a crushing defeat in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election on Sunday.
Her party, Tomin First no Kai (Tokyoites First Group) became the biggest party in the assembly with 49 of its 127 seats. Later, the Tomin First allowed 6 independents into the party. The Koike camp, also including Komeito, won 79 of the 127-seat assembly.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party, which had the largest pre-election strength of 57 seats, gained 23 seats, far below the previous all-time low of 38 seats.
Voter turnout stood at 51.28 percent, up from 43.50 percent in the previous election in 2013.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is also president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, on Monday expressed regret over the defeat in Sunday’s election.
He said that he must deeply reflect on the outcome, vowing to win back the
public’s trust by getting policy agendas moving along.
The big defeat of the Liberal Democratic Party is expected to deal a severe blow to the Abe government and weaken the prime minister’s centripetal force within the party.
The Liberal Democratic Party has been dogged by controversies over plans to open schools in western Japan. Opposition parties allege that government officials gave favorable treatment to school operators who support the prime minister.
The LDP suffered more embarrassment in the days leading up to the poll when two close allies of Prime Minister Abe became embroiled in controversy.
Defense Minister Tomomi Inada came under fire for appearing to imply in a stump speech that the Self-Defense Forces supported the LDP, and Mr. Shimomura, who served as education minister, was accused of mishandling political donations.

Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada is now under fire for her political remarks.
She suggested on Tuesday that the Self-Defense Forces support a Liberal Democratic Party candidate running in Sunday’s Tokyo metropolitan assembly election, sparking criticism from opposition parties that her remarks amounted to a political use of the nation’s defense apparatus.
Later in the day, Mrs. Inada retracted her remarks, acknowledging that it could have been misunderstood.
Under the law governing the country's defense apparatus, the SDF is meant to remain politically neutral and its personnel are restricted in their ability to engage in political activities.
Opposition parties are now demanding her resignation, as they say her remarks conflict with the SDF Law.
However, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga dismissed calls for Defense Minister Inada to step down.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, he said that she admitted that her remarks were misleading and that Mr. Inada confirmed that government institutions are politically neutral and do not endorse specific candidates. Mr. Suga said that he hopes the defense minister is accountable for her comments and will continue to devote herself to her duties.

Troubled Japanese air bag maker, Takata Corporation, has filed with Tokyo District Court for bankruptcy protection under Japan’s civil rehabilitation law, following massive recalls of its products around the world.
Takata’s liabilities are seen finally exceeding one trillion yen, or about 9 billion dollars, the largest amount for any failed manufacturer in Japan since the end of World War Two.
The head of the company, Chairman and CEO Shigehisa Takata, said at a news conference that he will step down to take responsibility for the company’s failure.
Takata said that it has reached a basic agreement to transfer its operations to U.S.auto parts maker, Key Safety Systems for about 1.6 billion dollars. The U.S. maker is owned by Chinese company Ningbo Hoyson Electronic Corporation.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has denied any involvement in his alleged collusion with Russia.
Testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, he called the allegation “an appalling and detestable lie”
Mr. Sessions’ remark came after former FBI director James Comey said in his testimony in a Senate committee that he believed he was fired to influence the agency’s investigation into relations between Mr. Trump’s election campaign team and Russia. Mr. Comey also referred to Mr. Sessions’ ties with Russia.
Mr. Sessions, who served a close adviser to the Trump’s campaign team, admitted that he met twice last year with the Russian ambassador to the United States. But he said that while he raised the issue of Ukraine with the ambassador, he does not recall bringing up any other issues during the meetings.
U.S. Democrats criticized Mr. Sessions for his partial refusal to answer questions over alleged collusion between Mr. Trump’s campaign team and Russia.

The United States has successfully shot down a mock intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time amid reports that North Korea continues to develop its nuclear and ICBM programs.
The U.S. Defense Department says that a ground-based interceptor was launched from Vandenberg Ai Force Base in California in the test to shoot down a mock-up of an ICBM from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific.
It says that the system is vitally important to the defense of U.S. homeland and the test demonstrates that the United States has a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat. The test came amid increased tensions with North Korea.
『Fox News』放送は、”US conducts successful missile intercept test, Pentagon says”(アメリカ国防総省発表、ミサイル迎撃実験成功)という見出しで、”The U.S. military successfully shot down a mock nuclear warhead simulating the speed and range of a potential North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile, the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency said Tuesday”(アメリカ国防総省のミサイル防衛局が発表したところによると、アメリカ軍は、北朝鮮の大陸間弾道ミサイルのスピードや範囲に似せた模擬の核弾頭を撃ち落とすことに成功した)と報じました。

North Korea says that it has successfully test-fired a new ballistic missile using a precision control guidance system.
North Korea’s state media said on Tuesday that the test was carried out under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un.
It said that leader Kim praised the accuracy of the missile and ordered to develop more powerful strategic weapons based on the present success.
The Japanese government said on Monday that the missile is believed to have fallen into Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan。
The missile reached as high as 120 kilometers and flew about 450 kilometers before landing in the sea.
The test was North Korea’s third missile launch test in 3 weeks.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that Japan has lodged a strong protest with North Korea through its embassy in Beijing over the latest ballistic missile launch.
He said that Japan will work alongside the United States to deter North Korea from further provocations and it will also work with the international community to maintain a high level of security.

Ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye has made her first appearance at her trial for receiving bribes, abuse of power and leaking confidential information and denied all the charges against her.
Park, 65, was indicted last month after being ousted from office in March.
She faces charges of conspiring with a longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil, to receive bribes of about 40 million dollars from the Samsung Group, the country’s largest industrial conglomerate. The total bribes include sums that were promised.
Park was also accused of pressuring private companies to provide funds for 2 foundations closely associated with Choi.
In the trial at Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday, a prosecutor read out the contents of Park’s indictment. Park’s defense counsel denied all of the 18 charges brought against her, saying that the indictment is based on imagination. Park said her position is the same as that of her lawyer.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has approved the deployment of a new intermediate ballistic missile and ordered its mass production, following another successful test.
North Korea’s state media reports that leader Kim supervised the launch test and praised it, describing the test as perfect and said his country’s nuclear arms should be more diversified and advanced.
The “Pukgukson-2” missile was an upgraded version of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
The state media says that the purpose of the test was to finally verify all the technical indexes of the weapon system and thoroughly examine its adaptability under various battle conditions, before its deployment at military units for action.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un approved the deployment of the missile to be used by the military and ordered that it should be rapidly mass-produced.
The latest test came just a week after North Korea said it had successfully tested a new type of ballistic missile that flew nearly 800 kilometers and traveled as high as about 2,100 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday held an emergency meeting to discuss the North Korean missile launch. The 15 members of the Security Council reaffirmed that they will implement sanctions against the country, but they remained divided over imposing additional sanctions.
韓国の『KBS(=Korean Broadcasting System)』放送は、”Kim Jong-un Deploys Pukgusong-2 Ballistic Missile”(キム・ジョンウン委員長、「北極星2」ミサイルの展開指示)という見出しで、”A South Korean naval aegis destroyer detected the launch from the North’s central western region shortly after the liftoff at around five p.m. Sunday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) said the missile flew about 500 kilometers. It dropped into the East Sea before reaching the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone.
